How to calm your mind

Tuning into your intuition is the most effective way to quiet your conscious mind when it won’t shut up because you’re:

  • Stuck in traffic, freaking out about being late to your work meeting
  • Planning out your retirement for the 429th time
  • Over-analyzing a conversation with your partner—from 3 years ago
  • Trying to teach your screaming child the importance of washing their hands

Though it takes time to develop and listen to your intuition, instead of the crowd sourcing what you should do by asking your boss, your mother, your children, or the neighbors, once you do, you’ll feel more confident, calm, and joyful—no matter what’s going on in your life. 

Imagine listening to your inner wisdom to make decisions instead of taking a poll about whether or not you should buy that swimsuit, leave the toxic relationship, or how to price services for your new business. 

But how are you supposed to do that? (Especially when the world teaches you to be disconnected, distracted, and impulsive.)

Steps to develop your intuition:

  1. Get quiet and eliminate outside distractions
  2. Think of a topic, discussion, or question you want to know more about
  3. Tune into how your body feels and bring awareness to those feelings (both emotions and sensations are great places to start)
  4. Let yourself feel those feelings fully and wash through your body
  5. Check in with yourself and listen

Just like building your muscles doesn’t take only one trip to the gym, don’t get frustrated if you can’t “hear” your inner wisdom after one question. Keep asking yourself these questions as often as possible. Simple requests like “shall I go straight or take a right here” as you’re driving home are perfect intuition builders—and celebrate the small achievements that come from trusting yourself.
